Copper chalcedony from Indonesia

What is Aquadité®?

Aquadité® (also written Aquadite) is the trade name for a chalcedony from Indonesia with inclusions of native copper, cuprite, chrysocolla and malachite.

GIA described the material in Gems & Gemology in 2022 under the title “Copper ‘Confetti’ Inclusions in Chalcedony” and identified the inclusions by Raman spectroscopy and EDXRF. A laboratory report will name it chalcedony; Aquadité® is the trade name.

Noble Facets is the exclusive European distributor.

The story behind the stone

In April 2022 a bulldozer clearing ground on an island in the Maluku archipelago split open a rock and exposed blue-green chalcedony flecked with copper.

Gem explorer Yianni Melas (@gemexplorer), who had earlier brought Aquaprase® to the trade, identified, documented and named the material and visited the site himself. The island holds three deposits, each with its own character of colour and inclusions.
The name. “Aqua” for the sea around the island and the colour of the stone. “Aphrodite” for the goddess born from the sea off Cyprus, the island that gave copper its Latin name, cuprum. Sea and copper in one word: Aquadité®.

Every stone a small landscape

  • Colour
From sea blue to peacock green.
  • Copper
Metallic flecks of native copper – the “confetti” GIA described.
  • Warm accents
Red cuprite tones that bring warmth into the blue-green.
  • No two alike
Every pattern is unique. We offer one-off pieces and matched pairs.

Aquadité® or a look-alike?

In short: metallic copper flecks in a hard, durable chalcedony – that is Aquadité®.

Working with Aquadité®

  1. Cabochons. The inclusions show best under a dome; faceting works against them.
  2. Orientation is the design decision. Which side faces up decides the picture, so choose the stone for the piece.
  3. Bezel rather than claw to protect the edges.
  4. Never clean in an ultrasonic bath.
  5. Directional light brings the copper to life, in the showcase and in photos.
  6. Warm metals pick up the copper tones.
  7. Unisex. Aquadité® works as well in men’s jewellery as in women’s.
